Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is a music video game developed by Neversoft published by Activision and RedOctane. It is the third full installment in the Guitar Hero series, and the fourth title overall. Guitar Hero III was first released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with the PlayStation 2 version developed through Budcat Creations and the Wii version through Vicarious Visions. Aspyr Media assisted in porting the game to the PC, and Mac platforms in late 2007. Due to the acquisition of RedOctane by Activision, Harmonix Music Systems is no longer involved in developing titles in the Guitar Hero series; instead, they developed the competing Rock Band.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock retains the same gameplay as the other games in the series. The player uses a special guitar-shaped controller to simulate the playing of rock music by playing in-time to scrolling notes on-screen. Guitar Hero III includes a new cooperative career mode and "Boss Battles" against both in-game characters and other players; the game is also the first in the series to allow for online play for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii versions. The game features over 70 total songs shipped on disk, many of which, in contrast to previous games, are master tracks. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions also feature the ability to download additional songs. Several musicians appear in Guitar Hero 3, including Tom Morello (of the bands Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave) and Slash (of the bands Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver) as in-game characters. The PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 versions also include Bret Michaels (of the band Poison).

The game was well-received, though reviewers noted the difference in the feel of the game compared to the previous installments due to the change of developer. The game was the best-selling video game of 2007, both in terms of units sold and revenue earned.

Batman: Vengeance is based on the TV cartoon that ran in the 1990s. Though the show drew inspiration from both Tim Burton's blockbuster motion picture and the official DC comic series, the Batman cartoon distinguished itself with its outstanding voice acting (featuring the likes of Mark Hamill, Roddy McDowall, and David Warner) and its distinctive look. All of the cartoon's scenery and characters looked extremely simple--Batman himself had a literally square jaw and a pair of triangles for eyes, but he always looked great leaping into action against his enemies, thanks to the cartoon's extremely fluid animation. Batman: Vengeance tries to capture the look of the cartoon series, and in some ways, it succeeds. Its characters, especially Batman, look much as they did in the later years of the cartoon show, and many of them, especially Batman, are animated extremely well.

As games get more and more advanced, a lot of them also get more and more complicated. That means longer learning curves, more instructions to sift through, and often more time spent learning the game than actually enjoying it, which makes games like Demolition Racer a treat: You can install it and be playing like a pro in under 30 minutes.

For such a simplistic single-player game, Demolition Racer does have a lot of variety. There are multiple types of races, from the standard chase mode where the winner is the one who gets around the track in the fastest time, to Last Man Standing, an arena-style demolition derby. What makes these races different is that they aren't scored by your final standing alone - that score is multiplied by the amount of damage you inflict on your opponents, so you can't just cruise to the front of the pack and expect victory. Points are scored for sideswipes, head-on collisions, and "death from above," in which you land directly on top of another car and knock it out with a single crunch.

There are ten tracks you can choose from (plus three demolition derby arenas), eight different cars, a single-race mode, and a number of different leagues. A lot of the cars, tracks, and types of races (like "chicken," where some cars drive against the flow of traffic) are hidden when you begin playing, but you unlock these features as you advance in league play.

Demolition Racer's controls are very good, and its physics are great. You'll see cars cartwheel down the track before they burst into flames or skid hundreds of feet upside-down before coming to a stop. The graphics are also good; there are some really nice textures in some places, although some objects look a bit flat. The music, done by bands like Fear Factory and Empirion, really fits well - the booming soundtrack is a great accompaniment to the bone-crushing races.The racing and collision physics are probably the best feature of Demolition Racer. The cars control extremely well and each car has a unique feel depending on its characteristics. Also, the frequent collisions throughout the game are sometimes nothing short of spectacular. You'll keep seeing new and fantastic pileups as you continue to play. Such crashes, as well as Demolition Racer's overall fun factor, make its replay value very high.

Its lack of any multiplayer support is a letdown, but Demolition Racer is great fun even without human opponents. The computer-controlled cars are pretty intelligent and will start coming after you if they know you've been shying away from collisions. However, the game would have been better if you could also smash your friends into oblivion.

The game's simplicity does have consequences, and while these problems are minor, Demolition Racer does have quite a few of them. There is no integrated rear-view mirror (you have to switch modes to see behind you) and no onscreen maps of the track you are on. You are not allowed off the track, which gets especially annoying when your car is flying through the air and you hit an invisible barrier to keep you on course. There isn't much variety in the type of damage your car will sustain either. First your hood will blow off the car, then the rear end will get smashed in, and then finally you'll start spewing smoke - this progression occurs identically each time. You'll also notice small annoyances like the fact that all 16 cars in a race look similar, but none of these really detract from the entertainment.

The biggest detriment to Demolition Racer's replay value is that as the game progresses, tracks start getting more and more difficult to the point where luck (who smashes into other cars the most) rather than skill determines the winner of the race. You'll have to drive a course 15 or 20 times to win, just because you were unlucky early on. The arena courses are particularly difficult in this regard - it's just pure dumb luck as to whether you survive long enough to make it to the next track.

By now, you've probably heard about The Sims. It all started with a little idea of controlling the lives of autonomous characters called "sims," and it took off in a big way to become a best-selling game series on multiple platforms--and on the PC, the series became infamous for its many expansion packs. The Sims 2 Seasons is the latest one, and unlike the last few expansions, this one doesn't add a zillion ambitious new features that make the game more complicated. Instead, it adds seasonal weather, crop farming, and some new group activities that can actually make the challenging gameplay of Sims 2 a more relaxed pastime. For players looking for a slower-paced experience that doesn't require you to keep track of the ins and outs of an in-game business--or constantly watch a hyperactive pet--this is a good thing.

Like the name of the expansion suggests, the primary addition that Seasons brings is...seasons. Specifically, weather and in-game events that correspond to different yearly seasons; in winter, for instance, snow falls, water freezes, and your sims can make snowmen. Certain seasons are more conducive to certain types of behavior than others; for instance, sims tend to be more amorous in summer.

You can manually change the current season in your neighborhood whenever you like. The season changes are heralded by new graphical weather effects, such as stormy weather and falling snow, that look quite good and change the look of your sims' neighborhood all year round. Many of the new seasonal activities are actually very useful, since they can fulfill your sims' personal needs (or "motives") for both social interaction and fun, and a good snowball fight also helps them build relationships with one another. Since much of The Sims 2's gameplay revolves around taking care of your little computer people's various motives of eating, sleeping, and going to the potty, these new features should be appealing to anyone who has found the series' micromanagement aspect a bit frustrating.

The same can be said of Seasons' new group items and its new agrarian gameplay. Seasons lets your sims become farmers and plant crops in the field; well-tended and watered plants eventually bear fruit (or vegetables) that can be sold at market or converted into a variety of juice drinks that can supercharge your sims, fulfilling their hunger and energy needs as well as letting them create goofier formulas like love potions. The expansion also lets you turn any nearby bodies of water into fishing holes, and it has a variety of fish and bait that your sims can use--again, while standing around with other sims, chatting away and building relationships while they wait for a fish to bite. Once caught, fish can either be mounted on a wall as a decoration or cooked up to provide powerful hunger bonuses.

Crazy Taxi

The original Crazy Taxi from Sega's internal team Hitmaker was released in arcades in 1999, and it was subsequently ported to Sega's Dreamcast video game console in 2000. Both versions of the game were simple, fun racing games that let you play as a cabbie in search of fares to transport to their destinations as quickly as possible, performing as many dangerous stunts (like narrowly scraping past oncoming cars) as possible to earn extra tips from your impatient, thrill-seeking passengers. Hitmaker went on to create two console follow-ups, the most recent of which is Crazy Taxi 3 for the Xbox. Yet, for some reason, the very first Crazy Taxi game has just now been ported to the PC, but considering how the port turned out, it probably shouldn't have been.

Eragon

Eragon is a third-person video game released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Microsoft Windows, developed by Stormfront Studios. More Secure

* One-click site info: Click the site favicon in the location bar to see who owns the site and to check if your connection is protected from eavesdropping. Identity verification is prominently displayed and easier to understand. When a site uses Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates, the site favicon button will turn green and show the name of the company you're connected to.
* Malware Protection: malware protection warns users when they arrive at sites which are known to install viruses, spyware, trojans or other malware.
* New Web Forgery Protection page: the content of pages suspected as web forgeries is no longer shown.
* New SSL error pages: clearer and stricter error pages are used when Firefox encounters an invalid SSL certificate.

Easier to Use

* Easier password management: an information bar replaces the old password dialog so you can now save passwords after a successful login.
* Simplified add-on installation: the add-ons whitelist has been removed making it possible to install extensions from third-party sites in fewer clicks.
* New Download Manager: the revised download manager makes it much easier to locate downloaded files, and you can see and search on the name of the website where a file came from. Your active downloads and time remaining are always shown in the status bar as your files download.
* Resumable downloading: users can now resume downloads after restarting the browser or resetting your network connection.
* Full page zoom: from the View menu and via keyboard shortcuts, the new zooming feature lets you zoom in and out of entire pages, scaling the layout, text and images, or optionally only the text size. Your settings will be remembered whenever you return to the site.
* Podcasts and Videocasts can be associated with your media playback tools.
* Tab scrolling and quickmenu: tabs are easier to locate with the new tab scrolling and tab quickmenu.
* Save what you were doing: Firefox will prompt users to save tabs on exit.
* Optimized Open in Tabs behavior: opening a folder of bookmarks in tabs now appends the new tabs rather than overwriting.

Sherlock Holmes:The Mystery of the Mummy

Sherlock Holmes: Mystery of the Mummy is an adventure game replete with puzzles, many of them timed, which takes place in its entirety in a privately owned Egyptian museum. The museum also serves as the impressive residence of Lord Montcalfe, a student of the antiquities, who has seemingly passed his passion for archeology, as well as other traits, on to his loving daughter Elisabeth.

But, alas, Lord Montcalfe has come up missing and his adoring daughter has thoughtfully engaged Sherlock, her distant cousin, to find her missing father. You, as Sherlock, become a part of the unfolding mystery solo, sans Watson, as you enter the museum in search of the missing Lord. Be aware that puzzle content and frequency becomes increasingly more difficult as you progress in the game. Good luck, Sherlock!

The puzzles might seem appealing to longtime fans of traditional adventure games, but unfortunately, the game's graphics probably won't seem appealing to anyone other than adventure-game die-hards. Mystery of the Mummy runs at a fixed resolution of 640x480, though from the looks of it, the game itself was designed at an even lower resolution, because nearly everything in Mystery of the Mummy looks blurry and unfocused. It doesn't help matters that Mystery of the Mummy's color palette is generally dark and drab--especially when some of the game's puzzles require you to hunt for hidden items and switches. Considering that most modern computer games have begun to use 3D graphics, it's safe to say that Mystery of the Mummy would have, and should have, looked better with a fully 3D graphics engine.

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened
An engaging story, logical puzzles, and nice visuals combine to make The Awakened a great adventure game.

If Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and H.P. Lovecraft had ever collaborated on a novel, the duo might have come up with a spooky saga a lot like Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened. This adventure, the third in Frogwares Game Development Company's series featuring the protagonist of such classic mysteries as The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Sign of Four, pits the deerstalker-wearing detective against the horrors of the Cthulhu mythos. While that combination may sound more like fan-fiction cheese than a pulp-fiction dream team, the tale here is told brilliantly, and the adventure mechanics are as faultlessly logical as the legendary sleuth himself.

That doesn't mean that the game is easy. On the contrary, Holmes and his sidekick, Dr. Watson, have to be extremely careful and observant to stop cultists from setting off Cthulhu's alarm clock. The big difference between The Awakened and the average adventure with its walk-through-prompting leaps of stupidity is that you can figure out all of the challenges that come your way if you approach them as Holmes himself. This means that you need to closely examine your surroundings, keeping an eye out for footprints, scraps of cloth, bits of fiber, and other nearly imperceptible clues that can help you unravel the mystery. In fact, this mystery begins with a missing servant and turns into a globe-spanning investigation into (cue Lovecraftian purple prose) indescribable eldritch horrors from beyond time and space!

However, the game isn't a tedious pixel hunt. If you scan all of the backdrops with Holmes' or Watson's practiced eyes, you'll spot important items almost immediately. Such key areas as desks and shelves can also usually be zoomed in on, so you know when something needs a look-see with Holmes' trusty magnifying glass. There is a great sense of consistency and internal logic at work here that keeps you on the right path as long as you scrutinize everything in sight. You are also presented with the odd bit of old-fashioned adventure-game goofiness. At one point, you McGyver together a blowgun out of a pipe and a hypodermic syringe, but much of the time, it feels like you're a real detective running down leads and collecting clues.

Terminator 3: War of the Machines is a first-person shooter based on the Terminator series, released in 2003 (following T3) for Windows. It was made by Clever's Games and distributed by Atari. As mentioned, there are two factions--the sentient machines, known as Skynet, and the humans, who are called Tech-Com. Each side has a small handful of classes that include basic roles, like snipers and heavy weapons specialists, but the Skynet side does offer a few interesting classes that are unavailable to the Tech-Com side. One of these is the infiltrator, which looks like a human, carries human weapons, and has the ability to drive human vehicles. The infiltrator is not as sneaky as you might think, though. If you're on the Tech-Com side, running your cursor over an infiltrator will immediately reveal it to be an enemy, thus making its ruse transparent and ultimately rendering it as rather useless. Skynet players can also spawn in as a tank that's armed with dual miniguns, or they can spawn in as the FK vehicle, which is a small hovercraft that's armed with lasers and missiles. The FK is the most mobile unit in the game, but it lacks the ability to capture bases.

There is one special unit--the original Terminator, as played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Tech-Com player with the highest frag count can choose to respawn as "the" Terminator, who combines the faster foot speed of the humans with the tougher armor of the Skynet machines. Unfortunately, the current California governor doesn't say much of anything aside from "It's time." and "I'm back."

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
"Short but sweet" is a good way to describe 2001's Max Payne, as well as its newly released sequel. Actually, the main difference between Max Payne 2 and its predecessor involves more of the circumstances under which the games arrived than anything existing in the games themselves. The original was victim to multiple development delays and spent years in the making, but, despite being a relatively brief experience, it was a thrilling, stylish, violent action game that was ultimately worth the wait. The sequel, on the other hand, was announced just months ago and hit store shelves on exactly the day it was supposed to. This new Max Payne, billed as "a film noir love story," was certainly worth the wait too, though this time, the wait was brief. As long as you go into it without expecting a dramatically different--or longer--gameplay experience than the original, Max Payne 2 won't disappoint. On its own merits, it's a stunning shooter that's got a bit too much plot and is over too soon, though it's still incredibly intense and, by all means, worth experiencing.

The storyline unfolds in much the same fashion as the original. It uses some very slick, graphic novel-style storyboards--complete with melodramatic dialogue straight out of a pulp detective novel--and good voice-over to go with it. These graphic novel sequences are unmistakably similar to those of the first game, though they are, in some cases, even more artistic this time around. Max Payne 2 certainly isn't lacking in its presentation. Even the game's special edition DVD-style packaging is slick, and all of the game's between-level loading screens and graphic novel sequences are impressive-looking and often very cool. The plot itself features a number of twists but is rather convoluted the first go-round. Play through the game a second time (perhaps on the higher difficulty setting that's unlocked after you finish it the first time) and you'll likely get a much clearer sense of what's happening.

Though many games today take elements from existing titles and try to put their own spin on them, this form of imitation isn't always a bad thing. There's something to be said for honing a concept. But the possibility that the new twist on an old formula won't actually improve the overall product certainly exists. The Punisher, a long-running Marvel Comics franchise about a vigilante trying to save the world from being overrun by scumbags, is no stranger to this concept. Back in 1993, the character appeared in an arcade game from Capcom that basically started with Final Fight as a template, and then dropped in The Punisher, Nick Fury, and so on. It wasn't so great. Now, THQ and Volition have delivered a new game with The Punisher name. While it attempts to put its own spin on the third-person shooter genre by adding sometimes-gruesome interrogation sequences, this game is, more or less, Max Payne without the bullet time.

Well, perhaps "without the bullet time" isn't entirely accurate. The Punisher can go into "slaughter mode," which slows the game down a bit. Slaughter mode is slightly unique in that, while in it, you'll regain some of your health and drop your guns in favor of a never-ending supply of knives that you can throw into the faces of enemies with stunning accuracy. The other twist to The Punisher is that you can grab any enemy for use as a human shield. Though doing this slows down your movement so much that it's only occasionally useful, once you've grabbed an enemy, you can choose to interrogate him. This brings up a little tension minigame, in which you have to work the mouse just right to keep a line in the proper section of a meter for three seconds. Once you do this, the perp will crack and tell you what he knows, and you'll get a little health boost for your trouble. Most enemies know next to nothing, and interrogating the average bad guy will get you one of only a few phrases per level. But some enemies yield more-interesting results, and these guys are clearly marked with a skull over their head, so you'll know to deal with them dead last.

The Punisher's family was wasted by the mob, and he's out for revenge. Unless you're already a fan of the character, that's all you really have to go on at the outset of the game. The story is told via a series of flashbacks. It seems that Frank Castle's finally been caught at the end of a three-week spree of crime fighting, though the NYPD sees his vigilante tactics in a slightly different light. The game opens with The Punisher being interrogated by the authorities in a little room on Ryker's Island (not to be confused with Rikers Island, the real-life prison). They talk him through the last three weeks, fading out to gameplay at certain points. You start out merely taking on the mob, which happens to be running a crack house and a chop shop in your neighborhood. Eventually, murdering your way up the mob's chain of command leads you to a much bigger terrorist plot. Players will find somewhere between 10 and 15 hours of action here the first time through, with the variance in time largely decided by your skill at getting headshots. The game gives you medals based on your performance, and you can choose to reenter levels with specific challenges to complete, though these additions don't really provide enough reason to go back to the game after completing it.

While Doom was the game that would make id Software a gaming-household name in the early '90s, over the years, the company shifted its focus away from the Doom games. As PC hardware and 3D acceleration became better and better, id became much more focused on engine development. Those engines were the underlying technology that powered the games in the Quake series, which began in 1996. Quake was among the first PC first-person shooters to let you take your multiplayer matches onto the Internet, and over the years, the series has become synonymous with great technology and exciting multiplayer. Now, in 2005, the roles of id's games have reversed a bit. The company's most recent engine is the one built for Doom 3, and Quake 4 runs on this same engine. Furthermore, Quake 4 wasn't even developed by id internally; it instead outsourced game development to the capable minds at Raven Software, who have turned in a fantastic-looking game with a great single-player campaign. The multiplayer, however, is underwhelming.

The three previous Quake games have all had very little to do with one another. The first game's story almost felt more like a retelling of Doom, dealing with inappropriately opened portals that spew out all sorts of horrific demons. Quake II ditched that storyline in favor of an Earth-versus-alien conflict that had you crash-landing on the alien homeworld in search of revenge. Quake III Arena was multiplayer focused, with no true single-player storyline other than that a wide collection of warriors--some taken from the Doom and Quake games--had been pulled out of their own timelines and into this futuristic battle arena. Quake 4 doubles back and picks up where Quake II left off. That nameless space marine from Quake II has apparently killed the Makron, the leader of the Strogg forces, and now it's up to you to get in there and try to finish the job. But, of course, things aren't quite what they seem.

In Quake 4, you play as a space marine named Matthew Kane, who has recently been assigned to Rhino Squad. In keeping with first-person shooter storyline tradition, Kane doesn't speak, but the marines around you will more than make up for the lack of chatter coming out of Kane's lips. You're the new guy, and some of the squad's even betting that you won't even survive for one day. With the Makron assumed dead, your squad is taking part in an operation to take advantage of the disarray and mop up the rest of the enemy forces on the Strogg planet. But your drop ship gets hit and comes down hard, killing a large chunk of your squadmates at the opening of the game. From there, you'll pull yourself up out of the muck and get down to business.

Eventually, your squad will get extracted back to a capital ship for reassignment. Here, you'll get to explore the ship, similar to how you could explore Voyager in Raven's Elite Force games. Then you're back out on a new mission designed to disrupt the Strogg communication network. And the story continues from there. While the story itself isn't particularly gripping, it's designed well enough to keep you interested in what's happening. There's also a potentially interesting plot twist in the game that, unfortunately, was revealed by id Software almost immediately, when the company first started talking about and showing off the game. We won't repeat it here, in case you've managed to stay away, because we have to imagine that the twist would have been a lot more interesting if you didn't see it coming. Just know that a few interesting things happen in the game, but they don't totally change the way the game is played or anything like that.

For the most part, Quake 4 is a standard, straightforward shooter in its single-player mode. While the minute-to-minute objectives might not be the most interesting thing in the world, the game's combat is generally pretty satisfying. It's almost as if Raven set out to prove that the Doom 3 engine could do more than just constantly try to surprise you, one enemy at a time. That's not to say that Quake 4's hallways are littered with angry enemies, but Quake 4 is definitely a much more hectic game than Doom 3 ever was. While you'll still deal with a lot of shadowy areas, this is less about making you jump out of your seat and more about running and gunning. When matched with the game's amazing graphical design, the single-player becomes an exciting thrill ride that, on the default difficulty setting, should take you somewhere around 10 to 15 hours to complete.

While not as remarkable as the technology that fuels it, the game itself is put together well enough to make Doom 3 legitimately great, all things considered.

Extremely impressive from a technical standpoint yet behind the times from a first-person-shooter design standpoint: This is the dichotomy that is Doom 3, the long-awaited sequel from well-known Texas-based developer id Software. Doom 3 is quite possibly the best-looking game ever, thanks to the brand-new 3D graphics engine used to generate its convincingly lifelike, densely atmospheric, and surprisingly expansive environments. At the same time, when you look past the spectacular appearance, you'll find a conventional, derivative shooter. In fact, if you played the original Doom or its sequel back in the mid '90s (or any popular '90s-era shooter, for that matter), you may be shocked by how similarly Doom 3 plays to those games. The legions of id Software's true believers will celebrate this straightforwardness as being deliberately "old school," especially since Doom 3 is packed with direct references to its classic predecessors. However, the truth of the matter is that Doom 3's gameplay structure and level design are behind the times and very much at odds with the game's cutting-edge, ultrarealistic looks. Yet the quality of the presentation truly is remarkable--enough so that it overwhelms Doom 3's occasional problems.

Doom 3 is essentially a remake of the original Doom, though series fans will find reimagined versions of almost every monster from both Doom and Doom II in the new sequel. You play as a nameless, voiceless 22nd-century space marine called by the Union Aerospace Corporation to its Mars research facility beset with mysterious problems--the forces of hell, to be exact. You'll end up single-handedly fighting back legions of hellspawn using weapons like shotguns, machine guns, and rocket launchers. As in the classic Doom games, your foes here are liable to strike at any time--often just as you round a corner, grab a much-needed power-up, or set foot into a new area. So, while your enemies will materialize without notice, and may occasionally startle you as they leap out of the darkness, Doom 3 cannot easily be described as scary or suspenseful. On the contrary, it's very predictable, and more or less it just goes through the same types of paces that you've probably gone through before in any number of other similar games.

Over the course of the game, you'll fight your way through a series of linear levels filled with locked doors, and you'll gradually find new weapons and occasionally meet new types of monsters. Early on, your apparent goal is to meet up with your squad, but as you might expect, you'll never actually get to fight alongside any human forces (no thanks to the omission of a co-op mode for multiple players, which was a signature element of past Doom games). Despite the game's cinematic trappings, it follows a formula that generally lacks drama or tension. Occasionally, the game presents to you a shocking or surprising scene--a hallucination or some hellish, otherworldly image. These moments are effective, but are too few and far between in the context of a single-player shooter that's of above-average length (somewhere between 15 to 20 hours). Fortunately, the campaign definitely picks up during the last several hours, once you finally reach (and keep going past) the point when you confront the enemy on its own turf. Getting to that point may be your primary motivation for trudging through some of the repetitive middle portions of the game, though.

Part of the issue is that Doom 3's storyline and narrative technique are ineffectual. Since the main character has no identity whatsoever (for whatever reason), the game tries to get you interested in everyone else on the base. You'll frequently find voice recordings and e-mail from various characters, but not only is a lot of this stuff bone dry, having to stop and read or stand around and listen to a rambling monologue jarringly disrupts the flow of the action. Unfortunately, if you choose to focus on the action by ignoring the seemingly extraneous story elements, you'll find that some of them aren't optional--you'll need to sift through those e-mails and listen to some of those voice recordings to get passcodes for locked doors and storage chests.

For what it's worth, the game's premise seems very fleshed out, and the game gives an amazing first impression. As you explore the UAC base, eavesdropping on various conversations and observing great, little details here and there, you'll get the impression that Doom 3 takes place in a fully realized world. Of course, all hell quickly breaks loose, and from that point onward you'll encounter scarce few creatures that you won't want to instantly shoot. The premise of the game will continue to unfold through occasional cutscenes and the aforementioned e-mails and recordings.

Overall a cute and fun asterix game that the fans(Asterix readers) will like and maybe stick to it for some time.

Most anyone who plays games would more than likely be very impressed with Call of Duty's authentic presentation, well designed and often very intense single-player missions, and fast-paced, entertaining multiplayer modes.

There is no shortage of World War II-themed first-person shooters available, and it's no secret that a number of them, including Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Battlefield 1942, are extremely good. Now you can add Call of Duty to that list. The first game by Infinity Ward, a studio composed of some of the same team that worked on Allied Assault, Call of Duty presents outstanding action all around and is at least as good as, and in several ways is simply better than, any similar game. Though both its single-player and multiplayer modes will be familiar to those who've been keeping up with the WWII-themed shooters of the past several years, most anyone who plays games would more than likely be very impressed with Call of Duty's authentic presentation, well designed and often very intense single-player missions, and fast-paced, entertaining multiplayer modes.

Call of Duty's distinguishing features, by and large, can't be considered innovations--that's too strong of a word. However, this is a game that pulls together many of the best aspects of other, similar games, and also includes all sorts of little "wish-list items" that may have crossed your mind while playing those other games. The result seems, above all, very well designed. The action in Call of Duty, ultimately, is arcadelike--much like in Allied Assault or Battlefield 1942. You can't survive a shot to the head, but you can take a few bullets anywhere else and can keep going just fine. There's also a clear onscreen indication of the direction from which you're taking fire (and, as you're getting hit, the screen shudders to make it look like it hurts). Luckily, first aid kits, conveniently placed in the levels or occasionally dropped by killed enemies, instantly restore large portions of your health. You hardly ever need to activate a "use" key in this game. When you do, you'll use it to instantly set explosives or grab documents, but you won't use it for opening doors.

Actually, that's because you won't be opening any doors. One gameplay contrivance that's presented in the first few seconds of the first mission is that any time you see a closed door in Call of Duty, it's supposed to stay closed. This seems like a minor point, but how many shooters have you played in which you fumbled for every doorknob, trying to find the one door that would actually open? That's simply not an issue in Call of Duty. Despite the highly authentic atmosphere created for the levels in the game, there tends to be an intuitive, clear path from the beginning of the level to the end. The levels can be challenging, at least at the higher two of the game's four difficulty settings, but they're not frustrating. If you die, you can restart at your most recent save almost instantly. You don't need to worry about hitting the quick-save key all the time, either, since the game automatically and seamlessly saves your progress not just at the beginning of a level but at several points throughout the level. The game's brief tutorial at the beginning of the single-player mode will be second nature for experienced players of first-person shooters. However, since it's in the context of a military boot camp, it will also provide, for new and experienced players alike, some valuable advice on (and practice with) the nuances of Call of Duty's gameplay.

Call of Duty features a wide arsenal of authentic American, British, Russian, and German WWII weapons, including various rifles, submachine guns, side arms, and grenades. You can carry only two larger weapons at a time (as well as a pistol and some grenades), so, typically, you'll want to have a rifle for out-in-the-open engagements and a submachine gun for tight-quarter combat. While armed with any of these, you may shoot from the hip, raise the weapon to eye level and aim down the sight (for more accuracy at the expense of movement speed), or use the butt of the weapon to try and club an enemy to death. Manually reloading your weapon tends to be faster than letting the clip run out, and some weapons let you switch firing modes, like going from full-auto to single shot (though, since you can squeeze off single rounds in full-auto mode, this isn't very useful). Your crosshairs expand when you're moving and contract when you're steady, pointing out how much more inaccurate you'll be if you try to run-and-gun. The weapons themselves are modeled very convincingly, thanks in no small part to the tactile sense you get from being able to look through their sights or use them as bludgeons, and most every one will earn your respect since, in the right situations, they can all be deadly effective.

Condition Zero's release is overshadowed by no fewer than three new technologically advanced, highly anticipated shooters, which all cast a harsh light on what is essentially a 6-year-old game--albeit a classic one.

When Counter-Strike: Condition Zero was first announced three years ago, it seemed like a decent enough idea. The definitive first-person shooter mod was at the height of its popularity, so having a single-player game based on the winning formula sounded like a good way to win a new following and perhaps entice even more people to venture online. However, those who have been reading up on the game over the years know that development has been a bumpy ride. The duty of making Condition Zero has practically been passed around more than the collection basket at Easter Mass. What started internally at Valve Software quickly moved to Gearbox, then to Ritual Entertainment, and finally over to Turtle Rock Studios. Given such an unusual development path, Condition Zero is surprisingly enjoyable, thanks mostly to some remarkable artificial intelligence. Unfortunately, the game will be remembered as a victim of its own delays. While the core gameplay is timeless, Condition Zero's release is overshadowed by no fewer than three technologically advanced, highly anticipated shooters, which all cast a harsh light on what is essentially a 6-year-old game--albeit a classic one.

By now, most FPS fans at least know what Counter-Strike is and have likely played it or have seen it. For those of you who have recently been paroled from a lengthy incarceration or have awakened from a coma, Counter-Strike is a team-based tactical shooter that pits terrorists versus counterterrorists in round-based match play. In the game's current incarnation, there are two game types--bombing and hostage rescue. Bombing maps require the terrorist team to plant and detonate a time bomb in one of two bombing areas while the counterterrorists guard these sites. Hostage rescue involves having the terrorists guard computer-controlled civilians while the counterterrorists try to rescue them. In practice, both game types often result in one team or the other being eliminated in bloody, fast shoot-outs.

Players earn money based on their performances in the previous rounds, and with this money, they can buy weapons at the beginning of each subsequent round (and those who survive the last round keep their guns). The game's arsenal is based on real-life weapons, including Desert Eagle pistols, pump-action shotguns, AK-47 assault rifles, and even some exotic equipment, like tactical shields that deflect bullets.

Single-player Condition Zero is just like the multiplayer version of Counter-Strike that's been played for years, only your teammates and the enemies are replaced by computer-controlled bots. You assume the role of the commander of a counterterrorist force, and you choose your teammates from a menu of named bots. The bots vary in skill, aggressiveness, choice of weapon, and tendency to cooperate with the rest of the team. Those with greater skill and more-powerful weapons cost more points to hire, but you'll earn points steadily as you make your way through the game's campaign.

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (CS:CZ) is a tactical action game that challenges you to compete with and against cunning computerized opponents in mission-based campaigns across the globe. The original SWAT game, released in 1995, was Daryl F. Gates' Police Quest: SWAT. Named after the former Los Angeles Police Chief who formed the world's first SWAT team, the original SWAT and its sequel were actually strategy games. It wasn't until SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle was released in 1999 that the series transitioned into the first-person-shooter genre. Throughout the years, each SWAT game has attempted to simulate what it's like to lead the world's most highly skilled and trained police officers into dangerous confrontations. It's been more than five years since the last SWAT, and the newest iteration of the series is the best one yet, offering an intelligent and flexible interface, a varied and highly replayable campaign, as well as multiplayer modes that include cooperative play.

As with the real-life SWAT teams, your job as an element commander in SWAT 4 is to take your five-man team into dangerous situations and defuse them. These situations range from a botched jewelry heist to high-risk arrest warrants to a raid on an illegal casino. In almost every mission, there are innocent civilians mixed in with the bad guys. Those of you who are Rainbow Six and Counter-Strike veterans will need to cool it on your itchy trigger fingers. Even when you do run into armed criminals, you don't have carte blanche to shoot them immediately. You have to follow the same strict rules of engagement as a real police officer and do whatever you can to subdue and arrest suspects without lethal force. Your guns are meant to be a last resort and should only be used if an armed suspect is an immediate threat to your team or civilians. This is the primary detail that separates the SWAT games from the military-style action games. The rules of engagement add a good deal of difficulty to the game, and SWAT 4 pulls this off well. At the end of each mission you're graded on how well you did, and more points are awarded for arresting as opposed to killing suspects. You are assessed big point penalties for improper use of force, and for the most part, these penalties are levied fairly and intuitively.

The 14-mission campaign isn't linked in any way. There's no overarching storyline that connects them all, so the campaign plays out just like a series of stand-alone missions. It starts you off with a training level that does a good job of acquainting you with the basics of using your weapons and commanding your teams. It's here that you're introduced to the game's interface. Your four subordinates are divided into a pair of two-man groups: red and blue. You can issue orders to the entire element or to each pair separately. Switching between the groups is done by tapping a key. The commands you give are done in a context-sensitive manner and are based on what your crosshair is pointing at. Point at a door and hold down the right mouse button, and you're able to access a menu that gives you different options, such as "Open and Clear," which orders your men to open the door and enter, or "Open, Bang, and Clear," which will order your men to open the door, toss in a flashbang grenade, and then run into the room to clear it of threats. Point your crosshair at a civilian and you can order your men to zip cuff him or her for safety. Aim at a locked door and you can order your men to pick the lock or blow it open with a charge or breaching shotgun.

The context-sensitive interface extends to a multipurpose use button as well. Point it at a suspect or hostage, and the use button will cause you to yell at the person to put his hands up and surrender. You'll be doing this a lot in SWAT 4, as you attempt to get suspects to respect your authority before shooting them. Point your cursor at a dropped weapon and you can pick it up to secure it. Aim at a cuffed criminal or civilian and your use key will radio a status report into command.

There are also interface options that allow you to remotely command one of your squad elements. For example, you can order red team to stack up at a door, and then leave them there while you take blue team around the corner to a second door (which leads into the same room). Even though you're out of visual range of red team, you can bring up a picture-in-picture window of what red team is seeing, and through that window you can order them to enter the door they're standing in front of. This is a neat option that allows you to simultaneously enter a room that has two doors. During a given mission there are also picture-in-picture windows you can open that give you a view of what external snipers are seeing, and you can even control your snipers via those windows.

It seems like a lot to take in, and certainly it takes a few mission runs before you become used to all the options available to you. But once you've gotten a few missions under your belt, ordering your squad elements and moving along with them becomes second nature. The structure of the campaign seems to mimic this standard learning curve, as the first few missions are rather simple and easy, but the difficulty ramps up considerably in the later missions, where you'll find complicated building architecture and numerous heavily armed suspects.

Probably one of the most significant changes in video games over the past 10 years has been the shift in focus from arcades to home console systems. While the arcade-style light-gun game enjoyed a slight revival in the mid-'90s, the genre has slowly but surely run out of steam as its primary venue, the arcade, has vanished. Released in 1998, Sega's The House of the Dead 2 was arguably one of the high points of the genre, with a consistent level of challenge, sharp graphics for its time, and, of course, terrible but endearing voice acting. Now, Sega and Wow Entertainment are wheeling out the House of the Dead franchise for a third time, this time exclusively on the Xbox. The basic form and function of a light-gun game are here, but whether or not that's going to capture anyone's attention at this point is highly questionable.

The House of the Dead III picks up 19 years after the events in The House of the Dead 2. The story revolves around Lisa Rogan and G, one of the characters from The House of the Dead 2, and their attempt to rescue Lisa's father from the bowels of an abandoned and creepy industrial complex. Unfortunately for them, it seems this facility houses some of the especially nasty experiments of Dr. Curien, the scientist who has single-handedly provided the light-gun fodder of all three House of the Dead games with his insane experiments with the undead. Though you'll put down wave after wave of zombies, interspersed with the occasional boss battle, the game lacks a singular head villain for you to chase after, such as the evil Goldman from The House of the Dead 2.

Light-gun games have remained essentially the same for the past six years, and, for the most part, The House of the Dead III honors this tradition, automatically moving the camera "on rails" from location to location so that zombies can pop up and be subsequently turned into green goo. As you make your way through the game, you'll occasionally be faced with what appear to be different paths, though multiple plays through the game reveal that you'll go through the same levels each time, and the path choices simply dictate your route.

The only real deviation the game makes from the series' tried-and-true formula is its the inclusion of an auto-reload feature, which eliminates the need to shoot the light gun offscreen to reload it. This isn't an inherently bad idea, but in practice it takes far too long to reload, slowing down the pacing of the game considerably and subsequently undermining much of the game's sense of urgency. More importantly, as was the case with the US Dreamcast, the Xbox has no official first-party light-gun controller, and Sega has not taken the initiative to manufacture its own. Instead, players will have to either use a standard Xbox controller, which works surprisingly well, or a third-party light-gun controller. Currently, Mad Catz produces the only light gun available for the Xbox. In the right setup, this gun is actually very effective, but it's hard to calibrate and becomes wildly inaccurate if the tip of the barrel is more than three feet away from the screen. The lack of a really good light gun peripheral for the Xbox, such as Namco's exceptional GunCon controller, is unfortunate, and it makes it just that much harder to enjoy The House of the Dead III. Though the stock Xbox controller might get the job done, playing a light-gun game without a light gun just isn't nearly as satisfying.

Once you've completed The House of the Dead III, which can be breezed through by competent players in under an hour, an almost pitch-perfect port of The House of the Dead 2 is unlocked. It's interesting to play The House of the Dead 2 right after finishing its successor, as it really exposes how sluggish the auto-reload feature is and how much easier The House of the Dead III is. You'll also find a "making of" featurette for the upcoming The House of the Dead feature film, which looks so amazingly bad that it might actually be funnier than the voice acting in The House of the Dead 2.

The House of the Dead movie might give The House of the Dead 2 a run for its money in terms of bad comedy, but the contest for most-hysterical sound design between The House of the Dead 2 and The House of the Dead III easily goes to the former. The voice acting in The House of the Dead III is technically more consistent, but it lacks the charm of The House of the Dead 2. And while there's no shortage of bad dialogue and stilted delivery, it's rarely so bad that it's funny--instead, it's just boring. The rest of the game's sound design follows suit, with generic shotgun sounds and a pastiche of zombie moans and groans.

The game's visual presentation definitely fares better, and it's easily the most well-produced aspect of The House of the Dead III. Early on in the game's development, Sega revealed that The House of the Dead III would be rendered using the cel-shading technique, but this plan was apparently nixed between then and now, as the final version of the game only shows minimal traces of this cartoon-inspired technique. Without this sharp divergence in style, the game evokes the same dark, grimy look of its predecessors, and most of the zombies look like upgraded versions of the zombies you've probably seen in previous House of the Dead games.

On the other hand, the bosses you'll encounter have gone from inventive and macabre to absolutely absurd. Excellent examples of this include the enormous, club-swinging security guard abomination in the first level, or the gigantic zombified sloth you encounter shortly thereafter. And we won't ruin the surprise for you, but the final boss in the game is downright laughable. Still, design choices aside, the game's graphics are technically sound, sporting detailed textures, crisp character models, and a fair amount of atmospheric lighting. One of the most effective uses of lighting plunges you into complete darkness, giving you only a flashlight to guide your way through the level.

It could be argued that being able to disable the otherwise unavoidable auto-reload feature in The House of the Dead III would have made it a significantly more challenging endeavor, and this might be true. But honestly, the mere fact that this is a light-gun game is going to dissuade more people from playing it than any specific mechanics it might have. With no similar competition on the Xbox, The House of the Dead III should satiate players looking for a light-gun fix, especially considering the inclusion of The House of the Dead 2 as a bonus. It could even serve as a passable introduction to the genre for players who haven't touched a light gun before. But if you're already worn out on the gameplay of other rail-based light-gun games, you'll find little to draw you back in House of the Dead III.

It's pretty standard for a Rainbow Six game to have a higher level of realism than your average shooter. And over the years, we've seen the slow shift of the series from spending more time during the planning phase of a mission, to using more first-person shooter skills in firefights. Essentially, they've moved from simulation towards arcade - something that many genres and game series have done in the last decade. So now, you'll find that while bullet damage is still fairly realistic, your enemies' aim, response time, and tactics have been dumbed down to the point where you can do just a little Rambo now and then and as long as you still follow the game's "take the enemy by surprise" style of moving through rooms and clearing them one at a time.

You'll have a team of two people with you, too, and you'll need them if you want to move along without a lot of trial-and-error deaths. You can order them to follow you, hold position, move to a specific spot, and by hitting your "use" key, issue them a context-sensitive order to use certain objects you point at (prepare to breach a door, move to start rappelling, and more). Most of the time you'll have your team on follow, place them on either side of a door, and send them in, possibly with a flashbang preceding them, while you stand in the back and cover a specific angle into the room you're hitting. Or, you might go around the other side and plug your enemies through a window or another door.

The environments and levels in R6V2 aren't the most incredibly detailed you'll see on the PC, or even on the Unreal Engine, but they do their job well enough. Characters look good and move well, and I found that the shift to the third person perspective when taking cover actually seems to work better on the PC than it does on the 360 version of the game - it just seems to be a bit snappier and it disoriented me less when the enemies started creeping around to flank me. Vegas itself is pretty good to look at, but much like with the first game, it's still not as impressive as I had hoped for. Ubisoft's stated system requirements are particularly vague in the video card department, but anything decent in the nVidia 7000-series or better (or ATI x1800 or so) should do fine.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 was under wraps until recently and is now just around the corner. Not long ago we went to Montreal and had a look at the single-player campaign, but we hadn't seen the multiplayer mode until now. We recently caught up with Ubisoft Montreal's game designer Philippe Therien in London, and he took us through some of the new additions to the multiplayer side of the game.

The rules for hiding and shooting from behind cover are the same here in Vegas 2. You hold a key to hide behind something, then hit a movement key to pop out from behind to take your shot. Use the zoom key to bust out the scope or use your iron sights, although you'll find that you don't need them much in the PC version since the weapons are pretty accurate and unless you're hip-firing a sniper rifle, you've always got a crosshair in the middle of your screen. You can also blind-fire your weapon from behind cover, a tactic that I'm not sure is actually used in real life that much. Not that it should matter here, as while this is certainly more sim-like than, say, Gears of War, we're not quite getting to Armed Assault levels of realism here. But hey, at least we can sprint now, which is something I never understood wasn't in more shooters. The ability to simply run when being shot at seems like such an integral part of a firefight; to me, omitting it in a modern shooter would be like giving the player guns that can't actually be reloaded.

The campaign takes about as long to complete as you'd expect an expansion pack to last, and then there's the Terrorist Hunt mode where you can set up a map with customized numbers of enemies to take out. This mode can be played alone or online with others, or you can always get together and do the versus modes as well. If you played the hell out of the first Vegas, by this point you will realize that this is pretty much just a stand-alone expansion pack. With very little in the way of new features and just a short continuation of the story on (what is an admittedly large number of) new maps, you might be wondering why Vegas 2 has a $50 price tag. Well, folks, that's pretty much what it's come to; at least when Ubisoft was making yearly installments in the Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell games they at least felt like entirely new entries. This one, unfortunately, does not. It's no different on consoles, except over there they pay an extra ten bucks for their expansion packs.

Still, Vegas 2 offers a few small additions that don't add much in the big picture, but they're nice to have. One of these is the ability to level up your character by killing enemies, both in single player and multiplayer modes, and you'll gain points for killing them in pretty much any way other than shooting them at medium range, center-of-mass, out in the open. Headshots, from behind, long range, through cover, with explosives, and more will help you level up faster, all of which goes towards unlocking new guns as well as gear that let you improve your ability to take hits (though, a full burst at close range is still gonna finish you off almost regardless of armor) and move quickly. You'll also get to make the trade-off of armor versus mobility with quite a few gear choices. You choose the gender or your character Bishop, too, and can configure the face and even use a webcam to upload your own mug for pasting onto the shot. Let's just say that that feature is great for listing on the back of the box but horrible in practice; most webcams won't get a clear enough picture to look even half-usable in the game.

The online modes are where people will likely spend at least half their time with this game, and some will be spending much more than that. For the most part, these work fine and the game comes with a nice selection of perks that online PC games need for longevity: dedicated servers, voice chat (although what's the lack of push-to-talk?), a decent in-game browser, a first patch out already with a set of fairly small fixes, and the ability to fiddle with game rules to match your liking.

Based on DreamWorks Animation’s Bee Movie film due out 2007 fall, Bee Movie Game lets players race, chase and fly their way through an adrenaline-fueled world of adventure as they experience the hilarious antics of Barry B. Benson, a dynamic and daring bee who knows there is more to life than making honey.

Bee Movie Game of course takes you into the world of Dreamworks' CGI film, Bee Movie, and in doing so it juggles plentiful game styles. From free roaming car diving to pollen collecting mini-games, it has plenty on offer, though most of your time is spent exploring a 3D world, on foot, or using the power of your bee's wings.

With so many game parodies and styles on offer, there are numerous controls and gameplay styles to grasp, but almost all are realised in a way that makes them instinctive and uncomplicated. The camera that captures the action occasionally makes things a little fiddly, and on very rare occasions things are slightly challenging. On the whole though, Bee Movie Game treads a fine line between frustrating difficulty and patronising simplicity, and as a result is perfectly pitched at the young audience it has been made for.

There's a reassuring U rating on the cover thanks to the BBFC, who also handle all film certification. Bee Movie Game certainly deserves that rating. It never nears anything scary, and as violent as it get is when you have to fire pollen at dragonflies with a mysterious predisposition towards suffering from hay fever. Far from being disturbing or encouraging disruptive behaviour, the game is quaint, cute and gentle, and rather picturesque.

The text is never overwhelming or demanding, and none of the adult orientated jokes that will drift over your child's head hide anything that would be difficult or embarrassing to explain to a youngster if they did press the issue.

While the visuals are not especially amazing in terms of technical prowess, they go someway beyond being merely competent, and as the game develops there really are some very attractive moments. Combined with the charming musical score and quick wit, the total package is brilliant to absorb.

Most impressive is that the humour, character and style of the film have made the translation to the game, and at times it is genuinely hilarious, cleverly parodying gaming stereotypes and clichés from Dreamworks and Pixar movies. The script is surprisingly well written, and some truly brilliant QTE sections really do give a feel for being in a scene from the recent movie.

Much of the movie's Hollywood voice cast returns for the video game, including Jerry Seinfeld as Barry Bee. Sadly it appears as though Vanessa, voiced by Renee Zellweger in the movie, is voiced by a sound-alike in the game.

Quite surprisingly, Bee Movie Game really is quite good. Compared to so many cinematic tie-ins, it is well considered, has occasional moments of originality, and definitely seems to avoid relying on its license to make up for bad design. Out of all the Pixar and Dreamworks games, it is absolutely among one of the best, and would make for a brilliant Christmas present if you're looking to satisfy the kids over the festive season.

in selected group instead of after converting the entire group;

f) if user specified a non-existent destination path in SFX archive
in Vista, SFX could enter into infinite "create new SFX window"
